Five Reasons for Kids to Continue Music Lessons Throughout the Summer

While kids look forward to summer vacation, many parents regard the school year’s final bell with trepidation.  Many parents struggle to find an enjoyable activity that will keep their children occupied until the next school year begins.  Fortunately, if your kids are taking music lessons, they have already found an activity that they like, so having them continue their music lessons during the summer is one of the best choices you can make.  If that is not reason enough, here are some other reasons why it is a good idea for kids to continue their lessons in the summer.

1) Summer Is Just More Fun

It is no fun to practice your musical instrument after you have been at school all day; it is much more enjoyable to practice amid leisure.  And, in the summer there is more time for family togetherness.  If other members of the family are musical, the whole family can jam and enjoy music instead of parents nagging kids about homework and music practice.
If your family happens to enjoy camping trips, it will be an honor for your kid to accompany the family on guitar during campfire sing-alongs. And even more so if your kid plays and sings at a camping trip with peers, such as a scout troop, a church youth group, or just a group of friends.  Meanwhile, playing in bands and orchestras outside of school provides a great opportunity for young people to form social connections with people they would not otherwise meet.  You can choose competitive or collaborative musical activities based on your children’s preferences.  The bond shared by all musicians can help create a feeling of togetherness at an age when many kids often feel isolated.

2) Keep Up the Energy After the Spring Concert

If your kid gave a show-stopping performance at the spring concert and was made to feel like a star, he or she will want to continue making progress in order to give an even more impressive performance the following year.  If your kids take a summer long break from their lessons, they can lose a lot of the progress they made during the year.  While it is great to take the opportunity to spend time outdoors in the summer, continuing weekly lessons in the summer will ensure that kids do not lose their momentum in developing their musical skills.  If your child is going to a overnight summer camp, research the camp’s options for music lessons.

3) Alternative to Screen Time

If left to their own devices, many kids would spend an entire summer sharpening their Candy Crush skills or racking up virtual accomplishments in Minecraft.  Music is one of very few things in the world that can lure people’s eyes away from the screen and their fingers from the touch screen keyboard.

4) Learning from the Masters

Live music events are a great source of excitement for children and adults.  Your kids can also find inspiration in seeing skilled musicians play.  Besides, attending live music events is a great opportunity for family togetherness.  The benefits last long after the performance ends.  After the show, you and your kids can watch YouTube clips together of other performances given by the performers you just saw, including ones that happened before they were born and thus couldn’t have seen otherwise.

5) Getting a Head Start on Next Year

If your kid keeps practicing their instrument during the summer, he or she can make a lot of progress between June and September.  When school starts again, he can impress the band director with how much he has improved since the last school year ended. And then, who knows – a full college scholarship wouldn’t hurt, would it?
