Intro to Photography
This 8-week experiential course is designed for students with little or no photographic background. Objectives include learning the functions of one’s own camera; understanding the concepts of composition, light and balance; knowing what creates interest in an image, and knowing what to look for before snapping the picture.
The class combines both classroom (lecture, discussion) instruction and instruction in the field. Students are asked to bring their cameras to each session (no tablet or cellphones). A tripod is strongly recommended. Students should dress appropriately for the environment on photo-shoot weeks. This is a highly individualized class, the goal of which is to improve the student’s photographic expertise from whatever point s/he begins the class to as far as s/he wishes to go.
Course Outline:
Session 1: Classroom. Lecture: Know Your Camera. Individual dials, buttons and settings/functions is discussed. Location for Week 2 photo shoot class is provided, along with specifics of the assignment.
Session 2: Field. Students meet at designated site with instructor. Students take photos with instructor’s individual assistance. Students are asked to email photos to instructor prior to Week 3 class meeting.
Session 3: Classroom. Student images are shown and critiqued. Lecture: Use of light in photography. Location for Week 4 class is provided, along with specifics of the assignment.
Session 4: Field. Students meet instructor at designated location, completing assignment with instructor assistance. Students email photos to instructor prior to Class 5.
Session 5: Classroom. Student images are shown and critiqued. Lecture: Use and implementation of color. Location for Week 6 class is provided, along with assignment.
Session 6: Field. Students meet instructor at designated location, completing assignment with instructor assistance. Students email photos to instructor prior to Week 7 class.
Session 7: Classroom. Student images are shown and critiqued. Lecture: Contrast and texture. Week 8 assignment is provided to students to complete on their own; photos to be emailed to instructor prior to Week 8 class.
Session 8: Classroom. Student images are shown and critiqued. Students are asked to evaluate the class experience.
