Slava Sorokin - Private Russian Lessons
"My child could read and speak in Russian... until she started school." Does this sound familiar?
Slava would often hear this concern from Russian-speaking parents while working in the children's section of the Morton Grove Public Library for many years. This led to the creation of her unique educational program for learning the Russian language that includes computer and board games, as well as writing/reading/verbal exercises targeting the specific needs of children and teens from Russian-speaking families growing up in the United States.
Preserving Russian (or any other) language is very difficult for children growing up in America. Slava’s primary goal is to engage students in a way that allows them to develop curiosity and interest in learning the language. In order to reach this goal, she makes the entertainment component an integral part of the learning process. Through her use of vocabulary games and activities, her students are both immersed in extensive grammatical exercises and are consistently engaged. Due to this unique method of teaching, students don’t experience the stress often associated with traditional forms of studying.
In the course of a private lesson, areas of focus include reading, writing, paraphrasing written material, and conversational expression of thoughts and ideas. School-aged children enthusiastically translate short stories from English to Russian. Slava’s extensive knowledge of American children’s literature allows her to carefully select stories for each student based on his/her particular areas of interest; this plays an important role in nurturing the student’s interest in reading.
Each student's curriculum is carefully crafted based on their knowledge of Russian language, areas of interest, and their personality. Homework assignments, tailored to each student, are sent through email.

Слава - дипломированный инженер и патентный эксперт, в России занималась составлением описаний изобретений к патентам. В течение последних 18 лет она работает в детском отделе районной библиотеки одного из пригородов Чикаго.
За годы работы в библиотеке ей нередко приходилось слышать, как дети, хорошо владевшие родным языком в раннем возрасте, быстро забывали его вскоре после поступления в американскую школу. Это и побудило её несколько лет назад к созданию увлекательных настольных, словесных и компьютерных учебных игр, разработанных с учётом специфики изучения языка в данных условиях.
Слава считает своей главной задачей развитие у детей интереса к языку, с тем, чтобы занятия не были тяжёлой повинностью для ребёнка, как это часто бывает, и именно поэтому её уроки основаны на играх. Несмотря на то, что эти игры направлены на интенсивное изучение грамматики и обогащение словарного запаса, дети играют с азартом и не чувствуют излишнего напряжения.
На индивидуальных занятиях большое внимание также уделяется чтению, правописанию и развитию способности грамотно пересказать прочитанное или изложить свою мысль. Кроме этого, в программу обучения детей школьного возраста включены занятия переводом с английского небольших интересных произведений американских авторов.
Обширное знание детской американской литературы позволяет Славе подбирать книги для детей, которые близки им по духу, поскольку выбор подходящей книги часто играет первостепенную роль в развитии у ребёнка интереса к чтению. Занятия спланированы с учётом уровня знаний, наклонностей и характера каждого ребёнка.
Дети выполняют домашние задания, присылаемые индивидуально для каждого ученика по эл. почте.
